Fit Twin Cities Spotlight: Colin DeWaay
Meet Colin DeWaay: weightlifting and bodybuilding guru and prolific fitness blogger. What sets Colin apart in the fitness community is his genuine passion to share his love of fitness. His research-based approach to fitness topics and trends makes him a trusted resource in the Twin Cities as well as all over the world. He is currently preparing to become a NASM certified personal trainer and looking to move from Minnesota to Florida. He has my full recommendation for anyone looking for help to get fit. Check out his articles for Lifestyle and Strength and his own Uber Beast Mode.
Colin, what is your fitness philosophy?
Challenging your body physically goes way beyond the gym, you learn a confidence that carries over into everything in life. Everything gets better when you are happy and healthy. I can honestly say I never would have had the guts to make this move to Florida before I got into fitness.
Much like me, you consider yourself a bodybuilder, but you don’t do competitions. Explain why you classify yourself as a bodybuilder?
I classify myself as a bodybuilder because my main goal from fitness is improving body composition. I take great pleasure in trying to increase muscle size and remain lean. I basically do everything a bodybuilder does minus the competition part of it. Calling a spade a spade I guess.
Why do you think more people should consider lifting weights?
Whether you want to build muscle or lose fat, lifting weights is the most effective way to get there. This is such a hard thing to convince most people who think the only way to fat loss is endless hours of cardio. Without getting into the science of it (something I’ll always gladly do if anyone wants info) more muscle = results. Common advice I give for people who don’t want to get too bulky is to do everything they can to get bulky. This is how they will get where they want to be, no joke.
What does exercise and fitness mean to you?
I don’t mean to sound cliché but it really is a lifestyle. I love fitness because it gives back what you give it, you can’t cheat it. Your body is your badge of honor and you get to wear it with you everywhere you go. I love the camaraderie and support within the fitness community. The way it gives me energy to keep up with my son and do every day activities. It’s my stress reliever and my ego booster, it keeps me going when things get tough. Exercise and fitness is irreplaceable.
One piece of advice for the average Joe’s and Jill’s out there:
Find something you enjoy and just keep doing. Too many people get stopped in their tracks and don’t work towards their goals because they are constantly looking for the perfect plan. There is no such thing as a perfect plan. The truth of the matter is you can do a lot of things “wrong” but if you work hard for a sustained period of time, you’ll get results. It’s the on again off again that kills results. Just keep doing.
I want to thank Colin for his time to share his love of fitness and his passions.
Follow Colin, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Mark over at Fit Twin Cities did an interview with me, be sure to check it out! If you are following him yet, be sure to do so!
Great interview. Floridians are lucky to be getting such a passionate and dedicated PT. (and I don’t think he’s one to accept lame excuses.)
