Why you don’t work out: Part III

You’ve found the time to work out by making fitness a priority. You overcame your fear of lifestyle change and committed to a life of fitness. But this is where your next excuse comes into play – the excuse that really prevents you from reaching your goals and the reason you still don’t work out. You just can’t find:

Motivation

You feel great when you’re motivated. You can do anything! But the problem is that your motivation never lasts. It may last for a day, or a week, or even a couple months, but eventually you lose your motivation again. One day it’s there. Then it’s gone.

When you need your motivation most, you can’t find it anywhere – kind of like your car keys. But when you can’t find your keys, you urgently search the house until you find them. Wouldn’t it be great if you searched for motivation as urgently as you did your lost car keys?

That would be a step in the right direction, but the problem with this is that we still have to dig, search, scour, and scrounge to find motivation. When you can’t find it, you give up and wait for it to show up on its own. But it doesn’t show up often. That is why you don’t work out.

Let’s take a quick look at the steps you currently take to reach your fitness goals:

1. Imagine the goal.
2. Establish what it will take to reach that goal.
3. Wait for motivation.
4. Do what it takes to reach that goal.

Your life will change if you do a very simple thing. Remove the “wait for motivation” step. The key to success is never waiting for motivation. You’re never going to reach that goal if all of your time is spent waiting.

Let me suggest a new method of attaining your goals:

1. Imagine the goal.
2. Establish what it will take to reach that goal.
3. Do what it takes to reach that goal.

Go ahead – you have my permission to skip a step. Stop waiting. Start doing.

Your whole life you’ve talked yourself into believing that you need motivation to be able to do something. You don’t. You need to do something to do something. Apply this to other areas of your life as well. Once you stop waiting and start doing, you might surprise yourself at what you are capable of.

The key to success is never waiting for motivation.

  1. A very wise person once said, ” Do, or do not, there is no try.” Sounds like good advice for the motivation to get physically fit.

(Yes, I just mixed Star Wars and personal fittness.)

    • Actually, come to think of it, Yoda was pretty much Luke’s personal trainer on Dagobagh. Cool.

  2. Great post. I hate to tell you this, but it was quite motivating!
Sometimes when I read something new that is helpful, profound, or smart I find myself asking,”Can it really be that simple?”
Ah, that is the beauty of a brilliant idea-not impossible or complex- SIMPLE and attainable.

    Thanks for this article.

    • Thanks for your feedback. I’m glad it was “motivating”! Thanks for reading!
