What to do Before Your Workout to Maximize Performance and Results

Once the initial motivation wears out, working out can feel like a chore. It’s best to make sure you’re doing everything you can to optimize your time in the weight room and that all starts with what you do before you leave your house. Here are some things you can do before your workout to set yourself up for success.

  1. Eat – Consuming a combination of carbs and protein about an hour before your workout will give your body the fuel to drive your workout. Some good examples include peanut butter toast, eggs and veggies, overnight oats, or a protein smoothie.
  2. Drink – The American College of Sports Medicine recommends drinking up to 20oz of water prior to exercise. Staying hydrated will help reduce cramps, soreness, and dizziness that can happen from exercise.
  3. Supplement – Pre-Workout powders can be great for improving mental focus and providing stimulants that will help you feel unstoppable during your lift. Your favorite energy drink can do the trick if you’re in a bind. If you’re sensitive to caffeine there are plenty of stimulant free pre workouts to choose from.
  4. Sleep – The most important thing you do for your workout must be done the night before. Getting 8 hours of sleep is crucial to optimizing your energy levels and your results in the weight room. Having proper energy and brain function will decrease your chance of injury and increase your ability to execute movement patterns and lift weight efficiently.
